PREPARING FOR ONLINE THERAPY

Time & Space for You

If you are coming to therapy because you are experiencing burnout, chances are you find it hard to make time for yourself or set boundaries with others. Choosing therapy is a good way to start so take the opportunity to create an hour in your week that is just for you.

Working online is a great way to do therapy because you can choose where you are for your sessions and you don’t have to get home afterwards when you might be feeling a bit vulnerable or wobbly. However, it's possible that you share your home with family or friends and so you need to put a few measures in place to create space for yourself that will support you in your therapy.

We are likely to talk about all kinds of things – some you will expect and perhaps some you won’t – and it is therefore important that you feel safe enough to talk and feel freely without being overheard, distracted or interrupted even by people you trust. So turn off your phone, find somewhere private, and let people know you are not available for an hour or so. If you have children, arrange for someone else to take care of them. Then, make yourself a hot drink or grab a glass of water, settle down somewhere comfortable and let’s talk.

Nancy reading. “We need solitude, because when we’re alone, we’re free from obligations, we don’t need to put on a show, and we can hear our own thoughts.”
